A natural experiment on the effect of the hold-out problem underlying contractual arrangements in economies with weak legal systems.

We use unique data on negotiated prices from Nicaraguan farm cooperatives supplying supermarkets to study the impact of supply agreements on producers’ mean output prices and price stability.

We explore how dynamic field experiments can help (i) intended beneficiaries learn and understand these complicated benefit streams and (ii) researchers better understand how the poor respond to risk when faced with nonlinear welfare dynamics.
