This three-year program of research, outreach, and education was to promote the use of index insurance to expand access to credit, and to increase adoption of improved production practices among African smallholders. The research question is whether index insurance backed by contingent credit con reduce the impacts of widespread agricultural loan defaults in wake of adverse systemic events. This should allow lenders to expand access to credit among smallholders and reduce interest rates.
