The Mali cotton industry is organized as a monopsony (CMDT). While cotton production takes place within cooperatives, cooperatives receive group loans in kind to input with a joint liability clause. However, this joint liability often creates social tensions within cooperatives and villages.

This presentation is based on AMA Innovation Lab projects for the 2013 BASIS/I4 Technical Committee Meeting. This meeting gathered researchers affiliated with the Index Insurance Innovation Initiative (I4) at UC Davis.
