Arid and semi-arid lands cover two thirds of Africa and is home to over 20 million pastoralists who rely on the lands for extensive livestock grazing. Pastoralists confront harsh and volatile environments which leads transhumant livelihoods. However, although the pastoralist system are adapted to variable climate, they are still very vulnerable to severe drought. Big heard losses cause humanitarian crises.

This presentation is based on the AMA Innovation Lab projects for an I4 technical meeting in Rome, Italy. This conference brought together researchers and stakeholders of involved in the global initiative towards Index Insurance.
